Indecent Dressing

– Orukotan Ayomikun Samuel

Dressing has become a retrogressive issue, many cerebral and competent resource persons have in their own little way, drum out their support for decent and modest dressing but each time, with all the efforts, we have not recorded a major headway in tackling the menace that is destroying the lives of myriad of youths.
Many years ago, since the prehistoric times, in almost all societies, people have worn some kind of clothing with some tribes, countries and even some ethnic groups having different purposes of wearing such clothing. However, many theories have been advanced as to why human beings began to wear clothing, in fact, many assumptions have been made but one of the earliest hypotheses is the so-called modesty/shame theory, some call it the fig leaf theory but whichever side of the coin turns to you, we are still saying the same thing. This theory is based on the biblical story of creation in the First book (Genesis) of the greatest book in the world, the Bible. The first human beings on planet earth (Adam and Eve) realized that they were naked after they ate an apple from the forbidden tree, the tree of knowledge but after violating the rule of the Lord, they were ashamed of their nakedness and they made clothing for themselves out of the fig leaves. As far back as the 19 century, people believed that people clothe primarily for reasons of modesty but we are now in the 21st century and people have different beliefs as to how they should dress. Thus, modesty is no longer important to about 80 percent of our youths. Now this menace has succeeded in affecting us negatively not only physically but it has also affected our spirituality.
With the rise of a non-religious world view, people began to offer other theories, which negate the fig-tree theory. Many arguments here and there, people with different opinions as to the aims and objectives of dressing. In fact, some argued that the origin of clothing was functional to protect the body from environmentally harsh conditions; others argued that some clothing was designed for sexual attraction just to display the body’s beauty. Is that the purpose of dressing? Was that the representation of dressing in the 19th century? Definitely, No This column will focus on the heavenly standard of dressing by creating an awareness as to why we must neglect the worldly standard of dressing even as the mishaps in the world suggests that the end time is near. This issue of dressing as a matter of fact has become a perennial issue, it has become a burning issue that needs to be clarified based on the word of God and that is the purpose of this very write up. Honestly, the sheer despair of seeing the abnormality in what people put on as dresses triggered me into writing this article. We are all selling something to the whole world, it is either you are selling modesty or you are selling shame. It is either one of the two. We are selling a way of life, we are selling a lifestyle but the question is what am I selling? What are you selling? This characteristic question is what we need to ask ourselves in our various Christian endeavours and do some checks and balances by employing the tools of self-evaluation and comparative analysis.
1Corinthians 3:16-17, underscores the importance of the temple of God. It reminds us how our body is to God, for crying out loud, our body is the temple of God and why must you expose the temple of God to the hazards of life that rages everyday but most times we neglect the verse
17 – That says if anything defiles the temple of God, such things will God destroy. However, we begin to expose the temple of God to the lust of this life; we begin to limit God in our lives all because of the misuse of the temple of God in our lives.
While I remain critical and conscious about what I use my pen to construct and destruct, I like to call a spade, a spade not minding whose ox is gored, I like to say it as it is. Dressing has become a retrogressive issue, many cerebral and competent resource persons have in their own little way drum out their support for decent and modest dressing but each time, with all the efforts, we have not recorded a major headway in tackling the menace that is destroying the lives of myriad of youths.
When we go back into comparison between the 21st century youth and the olden-days youth, you discover that there is a huge difference in their insight and assumptions towards dressing.
Civilization seems to be getting into the heads of some people, some are being affected by peer pressure, and some are only following this worldly pattern so that people will call them “new school.” The report of people keeps them moving, thus, their dis-approval will stop them. Such is life.
However, if all we need to do is to imitate the culture that brought dignity and honour to the olden-days youth(especially women), then I think it is high time we shed our ego and imitate what will move us forward as individuals. Honestly, we need to experience a renaissance.
I have a very different opinion about dressing and fashion; there is nothing wrong in being gregarious. There is nothing wrong in wearing expensive clothing provided you do not steal to buy them; in fact, there is nothing too wrong in being “too fashion conscious.” If you so desire it but what I dislike about fashion points to the way nakedness has taken over the place all in the name of dressing. You can say what you like about long dresses but honestly, they cover a multitude of sins. That is just my opinion.
Nevertheless, some will say, she wears her clothes as if they were thrown on her with a pitchfork. Others will tell you, a sweet disorder in her dress kindles in clothes wantonness, but I was agape when she said: she feminized corporate attire and said it was okay for a woman to show off her body and still be considered respectable. OH MY GOD. This is indeed life and its many stop over’s.
My esteemed readers, you do not need to sell the temple of God before you get fame. You do not need to defile the temple of God before they know you indeed subscribed to the fashion world. You do not need all of this things in this Christian race we are all running, rather seek first the kingdom of God and every other things shall be added unto thee. The body is truly the garment of the soul that has a living voice, for that reason, it is fitting that the body simultaneously with the soul repeatedly sing praises to God through the voice. He, who has ears, let him hear.Indecent Dressing – Orukotan Ayomikun Samuel
